About Coach Wang
Rocky Wang is currently an artist and table tennis coach. Most recently, he left a position doing events for SPiN NYC where he also coached. He encountered Pong Club while traveling around the country as a player/coach and collaborating on a ping pong documentary with his friend Mark.
Early Life
He started playing Table Tennis at the age of ten and by age thirteen he was chosen to live and train at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado. This is where he met his longtime coach Cheng Ying Hua (National Champion and Olympian).
Rocky won numerous gold medals and national titles as a junior. When he was sixteen he defeated the current five-time national champion Sean O'neill.
Rocky has trained with the Chinese National team, Beijing team, and German National junior team. He represented the US in the first Youth World Championships in Tokyo. Rocky then went on to play for his University of Maryland team and won two National titles for them.
Back In Action
After taking a 12-year break from the sport to pursue art and other interests, Rocky could not resist playing a small tournament while living in Alabama. He went on to win the Dixie Open in 2007 and got hooked playing again.
This was also the time when he realized his passion for teaching others and began coaching at his former coach Cheng's club, the MDTTC and also the JOOLA club in Rockville, MD. After this, Rocky then went to New York to coach and host coporate events and private parties at SPiN. After some years there he started traveling around the country playing and coaching while his friend Mark films an eposodic documentary about the culture of ping pong.
Coming to Austin
In the course of his travels, Rocky saw a lot of table tennis clubs and met a lot of people. When he came to visit Pong Club he saw an opportunity to help build something and take on a new challenge. Be sure to say hello to Rocky and see the kind of difference a real coach can make in your game!
